A larger danger in those times was that the wrong person could be arrested and convicted for a crime. Luck was often with the careful criminal, who made sure not to leave behind any incriminating evidence. Those charged with law enforcement had to rely on luck, witnesses, and any obvious clues that the criminal might have left behind. If the criminal could commit a crime and leave its scene undetected, he or she stood a good chance of escaping justice. For a long time, the advantage was with the criminal. Those who break the law have another interest, mainly to cover up their crimes and elude detection for as long as possible, preferably forever. Only by the swift detection, capture, and punishment of the criminal can order be maintained. So when a crime is committed, it is vital to society to quickly identify the lawbreaker. Laws that are unenforced soon cease to be effective.
Those who do not are punished as an example and a warning to the rest. To maintain order, most societies establish laws, rules of behavior that people are expected to obey. Murder, robbery, theft, and rape are part of humankind’s history.
